Prior to 1960, the few Nigerians who traveled to the United States were considered Commonwealth Citizens. However, following the attainment of independence in 1960, Nigerians were able to travel abroad as citizens of an independent state. Majority of those who came to the United States and Europe returned to Nigeria after the successful completion of their studies to fill positions vacated by the British Colonialists. By 1970, there was a phenomenal influx of Nigerians into the United States and while a few returned to Nigeria, very many decided to stay. By 1985, it was estimated that there were over 100,000 Nigerians with college degrees living in the United States. The increasing number of Nigerians resident in the United States gave birth to the idea of an organization that could serve as an organ for Nigerians and their communities outside Nigeria. Thus LOPaN Inc., a National Organization of Nigerian Professionals, was founded in 1986. LOPaN Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1987.
